RICHMOND, Va. — A Richmond nonprofit is requesting support to train restaurant and bar staff on how to spot sexual harassment and violence.

Kailie Smith is the founder of Safe Bars RVA. He organized the group while working at the Don’t Look Back restaurant on West Broad Street.

Smith sought to educate and arm her co-workers with the knowledge of how to spot sexual harassment and then how to appropriately respond to it.

“We go out and do two-and-a-half-hour training sessions in bars, and we teach them what it looks like when people are uncomfortable. How do you respond to that? It can be really awkward to answer,” he explained.

The main goal of the nonprofit organization is to reduce cases of sexual assault and sexual violence in bars, restaurants, and venues. The smaller goal is to empower people to make their workplaces safer.

“Anyone who has ever worked in a bar or even been to a bar has probably seen how pervasive sexual harassment and sexual violence is. Whether it’s a creepy manager or just a customer who doesn’t understand boundaries. They are fertile environments for harassment and violence. So we just want to empower people to make their workplaces safer and bars safer,” Smith said.

She now works at Safe Harbor, a nonprofit organization that provides support to those who have experienced or are experiencing domestic violence, sexual violence, or human trafficking.

Smith’s team includes bartenders, violence prevention professionals and counselors who have completed Safe Bars training.

They have trained nine restaurant employees so far, with more training scheduled for the fall. Smith is requesting funds to help expand his team and offer free training sessions in more locations.
