At least one major company is showing no signs of a recession.
Sysco, the largest distributor of broad lines, said on Tuesday that it does not see the effect of an economic crisis on its business and called the restaurant industry “resilient”.
“We don’t see any recession concerns affecting our business,” CEO Kevin Hourican told analysts on Tuesday, according to a note on the Sentieo financial services website.
“We do not have, at this time, an impact of a recession on our” statement of profit and loss, he added.
But the company is not ignoring the economic crisis, either. “We are watching the economic situation closely for signs of a slowdown in business,” Hourican said.
He specifically mentioned the non-commercial sector, including colleges and universities and medical facilities, among others, for further improvement in the coming months. “We see continued strength coming in as the tail continues in the non-commercial sector,” Hourican said.
Sysco’s sales rose 16.2% in the company’s fiscal first quarter ended October 1, compared to the same period last year. Net income rose 17.4% to $3.5 billion. The number of food services in the US increased by 7.3% compared to the same quarter last year.
The information from Sysco is notable because the company is a large seller of food and other products to restaurants and non-commercial people. The Houston-based company will be the first to see signs of a downturn, given its wide reach.
“We’re very selective,” Hourican said. “We cover all elements of the food-from-home sector from the most high-end, white cloth restaurants down to the QSR and everything in between. “We don’t see any general changes. in our numbers.”
Hourican’s comments did not mean that a crash was a non-event. But they are compared to less than the statement from McDonald’s management, which expects a decline in the coming months.
Some authorities have suggested that low-income diners are changing their diet, shifting spending from more expensive options to cheaper options like McDonald’s. Domino’s, meanwhile, has shown that customers may turn away from delivery, due to its overall cost.
As for Sysco, the general distributor said it is preparing to take steps to reduce its costs if the economy turns south. But, Hourican said, the company will not reduce its workforce. And the information also suggests that the company blames the rapid reduction of employees on the current problems with the distribution of employees.
“We are not reducing staff in our supply chain,” Hourican said. “We don’t reduce drivers, for example. COVID proved that cost reduction efforts at the beginning of COVID because of the severity resulted in staff shortages that were very difficult to get out of. . And we’re still looking.”
The company also believes that market share can be improved if the economy turns south. “We have opportunities to share when the economy starts to get stronger,” Hourican said.
