A man in Australia has been bestowed one of the food industry’s highest honours.

The anonymous bloke, known only as Hummus Knight, set out to devour his weight in the delicious dip in a year.

It’s tough to judge how much he weighs, but it looked like the mission would see him consume dozens upon dozens of hummus tubs.

While he didn’t manage to achieve his body weight, he was able to knock back 37 one kilogram tubs of Yumi’s Hummus.

Not only that, but he made a suit of armour from all the finished plastic buckets.

The feat was so impressive that Yumi’s put on a humungous ceremony for the lad and ‘knighted’ him for his efforts.

Staff at the Yumi’s Quality Foods factory formed a guard of honour as the Hummus Knight walked in to collect his prize.

Susan Booker, Yumi’s head of marketing and innovation, played the role of the Hummus Queen and knighted the man with a carrot stick.

“The effort he went to to create such an incredible suit of armour, honouring my kingdom, he was an obvious choice,” Susan explained to 9News.

He plans to spread ‘the good word of hummus’ now that he officially has the title of Hummus Knight.

I know, I know, a statement like that would cause shock, horror, disappointment and dismay, but it’s true.

This isn’t a question of how much someone can individually devour in a single sitting (I’ve personally seen a friend try to eat a one kilo tub of the stuff because he was dared to), but more of how much the body can tolerate in general.

She said it’s a fantastic snack, but it does have a tricky side to it.

“It is full of fibre, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals-all the makings of a nutritious food…[but] hummus is made from chickpeas, which are a legume,” she revealed.

“These can be hard to digest for many people, and induce GI [gastrointestinal] inflammation.”

As a result, if you start to feel bloated, gassy or you can’t stop burping, then that’s your body telling you you’ve had too much.

If your body can process fibre well then you’ll be miles in front of your friends who can’t get the indigestible parts of plant foods through their system as easily.

But fear not, you can allow your body to eat more hummus if you steadily and gradually increase your fibre intake – aka the secret to more hummus is more hummus.
