The Tasmanian Government recognises the unique and valuable contributions women make to our seafood industry, which is why we have partnered with Women in Seafood Australasia (WISA) to offer two bursaries to this year’s Seafood Directions conference.

Seafood Directions is a national forum that brings together industry colleagues to promote the seafood industry, discuss industry issues, workshop solutions, teach best practices, share knowledge, and plan for the future of the seafood sector.

Land and Sea Aboriginal Corporation Tasmania’s (LSACT) Dianne Baldock, and Tasmanian Gourmet Seafoods’ Tabitha Dobson have each received a $5,000 bursary to support their attendance at the three-day conference in Brisbane this September.

Dianne Baldock is a Tasmanian Aboriginal woman and director of the LSACT, which is at the forefront of developing indigenous fisheries in the State. Tabitha Dobson is the owner and manager of Cambridge’s Tasmanian Gourmet Seafoods and is heavily involved in seafood retailing.

These women will be mentored throughout the conference and have the opportunity to attend events including a workshop to develop actionable plans to address barriers to women’s progression in the seafood industry.

They will also attend a session on story telling for business marketing and communications. Importantly they will then be able to come back to the state and share what they learnt with others in the industry.

WISA President and Tasmanian Director Heidi Mumme said the organisation was delighted by the quality and number of applications from Tasmanian women in seafood and there were many deserving applicants who WISA will connect directly with in the future.

The Tasmanian Government’s $10,000 funding contribution is part of the Wild Fisheries Action Plan, an election commitment to support the commercial fisheries sector.
