A restaurant fire at a popular eating precinct on Auckland’s North Shore has forced a road closure in Takapuna.
Stuff understands the fire broke out around 6pm on Tuesday at the El Humero restaurant which is part of the Eat Street complex on Hurstmere Rd.
Police and Fire and Emergency Services were called out and closed the street to traffic while the blaze was dealt with.
“Flames were showing from the first floor of the building. Hurstmere Rd has been closed to traffic,” a police spokesperson explained.

Stuff was unable to reach El Humero staff or management on Tuesday evening.
One witness said police and several fire trucks quickly arrived to tackle the fire and close off the street.
“It was at El Humero. It was a big enough fire to cause a big commotion,” said a staff member from a nearby business.
“There were five or six fire trucks. There was a huge amount of smoke coming from inside and from outside the chimney.
“The firefighters are still here at the moment just because it is a safety hazard, and it might trigger and set fire again.”
An employee from another nearby business said the fire started in the El Humero kitchen.
“I’m pretty sure it was a grill fire. The alley way and Hurstmere Eat Street was closed off,” the worker said.
“There was a bit of smoke in the alleyway, but that was all really.”
