Independent restaurant Atomic Burger in Cowley Road appears to have closed for good.

The popular eaterie first opened in 2009 and this was followed by Atomic Pizza a short distance away.

Atomic Burger outlasted Atomic Pizza but it now looks like Atomic Burger has closed too.

Chairs and tables and other items have been removed from the restaurant and there is no longer a sign outside sayin when it will next be open.

The Atomic Burger restaurant in Bristol is listed on google as being ‘permanently closed’.

One diner said on Facebook: “Does anyone know what happened to Atomic Burger on Cowley Road?

“They closed down without warning about six weeks ago and have not reopened.

“Their website and social media accounts don’t indicate that they have closed down, and there is no notice on the door, but I assume they are gone for good as all the decorations and furniture have been removed. They also seem to have deactivated their email address.

Oxford Mail:

“I know it’s odd to get overly attached to random restaurants, but I have been to Atomic Burger for my birthdays for nearly a decade and have taken my son there since he was little, and it feels a bit sad and brutal to disappear without even a goodbye message.”

Another diner replied: “They actually did put a post up when they closed down but it’s since been removed.”

Another commented: “They closed their second location (Atomic Pizza) on Cowley Road ages ago but the location on the corner of Stockmore Street was still open recently.”

Oxford Mail:

After it opened, Atomic Burger very quickly developed into a popular, local independent, that had a refreshing way of seeing things.

The food was all homemade on site, including mountains of buffalo wings, spicy, sticky and served with the correct dips.

You could also get nachos dripping with chilli, fresh guacamole, crunchy salsa, gooey cheese and cream cheese stuffed jalapeños.

At one point there were 21 different burgers (all available as ground beef, chicken breast or homemade veggie), and these could be sampled with shakes, sodas, bottles and craft bottle beers.

A range of hot dogs used real German bratwurst dogs, and all the dishes has tenuously linked names to iconic characters or people from diners’ childhood days.

Some were easy to spot, such as the Jake ‘n Elwood burger (blue cheese crumbles, crispy bacon and fried onions) from the Blues Brothers.

Oxford Mail:

Some were slightly more difficult to spot – for the Will Robinson (Swiss cheese, Shroomies, garlic aioli), think Lost in Space, Swiss Family Robinson and Swiss cheese.

Part of the restaurant’s charm, apart from the tasty food, was the nostalgic decor, which included classic toys, and sights and sounds from the 1970s and 1980s including Doctor Who and Star Wars.

It is not known why Atomic Burger has closed.

The closure follows the introduction of Low Traffic Neighbourhood restrictions, which have effectively closed some side roads between Iffley Road and Cowley Road to ordinary traffic.
